The Ordinary AR Mural

Brief

In partnership with One Agency, The Ordinary unveiled their brand new skincare and bodycare products using augmented reality (AR), a new venture for all involved. Taking inspiration from a project we’d previously done for Sol De Janeiro*, The Ordinary commissioned a custom AR mural to introduce the launch of their three brand new skincare and bodycare products:

– Natural Moisturising Factors + Inulin Body Lotion
– Salicylic Acid 0.5% Body Serum
– Niacinamide 5% Face and Body Emulsion

Process

One Agency knew the concept needed to go beyond a mural; it had to be innovative, interactive, and informative. They settled on an AR style campaign to seamlessly blend the digital and real world to achieve their goals.

 

Our motion designers got to work building exact digital replicas of the new products and cards for them to sit on, leaving no detail untouched. Once happy, the designs were passed to our web development team who animated the designs using Javascript’s framework, Three.js. This enabled users to play around with the products with full 360 rotation. When tapped, the product card spun to reveal key information such as ingredients, usage directions, and product efficacy. They also incorporated a ‘free product’ button allowing users to be in with a daily chance of winning one of The Ordinary’s best sellers.

 

Hare & Hounds was chosen as the site for the mural as it’s 222 square metres big, and with no obstacles blocking the view of the mural, it boasts great potential for exposure for the artistic edge of the mural to draw people in. Also, the Northern Quarter is home to a huge percentage of The Ordinary’s target audience – young adults who want luxury skincare without the luxury price tag.

Results

The final execution is a testament to One Agency’s cutting-edge, forward-thinking work, and we’re incredibly proud of the end result! The time and care taken to produce this activation, and support The Ordinary on their mission, is evidenced in the perfect 3D product models, smooth user experience, and ecstatic client feedback.
